What is “Good News” …

Christians will celebrate Palm Sunday and then Easter over the next two weekends. The “Gospel” will be declared. What is “Good News” for people today? The Religion section of the Daily Oklahoman highlighted ways Easter will be celebrated.

Carla Hinton suggests, “But the commercialization of Easter often makes it hard to keep the real purpose of the Resurrection celebration in perspective.”

She goes on to quote, “In addition to the annual Easter clothes, card, flower and candy blitz, attempts by business interests to make Easter a ‘Second Christmas’ have spawned an Easter-oriented toy industry and a massive live-animal business selling millions of rabbits, baby chicks and ducks each year,” according to “To Celebrate: Reshaping Holidays and Rites of Passage,” an online resource sponsored by Alternatives for Simple Living.

I am not sure it is Good News to market Easter in hopes of padding the bottom line. I am not sure we who call ourselves Christian have not helped create this environment. Is this really Good News.
