A Grandparent’s Vocation – Brueggemann’s Juice of Emancipation

What is a grandparent to do? Today, many a grandparent finds themselves raising their grandchildren. In that case, a grandparent’s vocation is parental.

Others of us are just getting into the whole grandparent gig – and liking it. We joke about spoiling the grandchildren and then sending them home to their parents. We find those little ones “perfect in every way,” as my mentor described his first grandchild years ago.

We do wonder from time to time what is our role, our vocation. Walter Brueggemann suggests the vocation of a grandparent is to offer the juice of emancipation. We tell the stories of liberty and freedom, of what hopes there are when we leave our Pharoahs behind.

This weeks’ Weekly Video (in the right sidebar) offers Brueggemann’s thoughts on a couple of verses in Exodus 10.
