We enjoyed our annual Fall Festival at Snow Hill yesterday. Watching the children play games, enjoy food, and receive candy reminded me of Sara Groves’ new CD, Invisible Empires. Sara and Troy walk through the songs in a “Director’s Cut” edition. Eugene Peterson figures prominently as inspirational muse.
Our staff is currently reading Peterson’s, The Pastor: A Memoir. The early chapters lead the reader to understand the creative impulse that marks The Message and other of Peterson’s books. I thought of this when I saw a costume one of our youth wore yesterday. Tyler wore a “chick magnet.” It was not what you think, unless you use your imagination. He wore a very large replica of a magnet and on each end of the u-shaped magnet were glued small “yellow chicks.”
Peterson recalls his mother the story teller. Groves draws on the imagery of Peterson in his book, A Long Obedience in the Same Direction. The children yesterday drew on the sources around them for their own creativity. I am glad for lyricists whose words call attention to the image of God in humanity. Indeed a creative God.
