Love Wins . . . And Continues to Win

Love has been in the news. Today we make some news of our own. Twenty-eight years ago to the day, Patty and I stood and expressed our love in two words, “I do.”

These years later we have filled out the meaning of those two words in ways we likely never imagined. Even with the vows we were agreeing to we could not possibly have known the ways “better or worse,” or “richer or poorer” would look in our shared lives.

We have learned that cultural and religious posturing over gender roles and sexuality does no often take into account how two people will learn to live together. Love wins. Roles don’t. We have learned that our enjoyment in life comes inexorably linked to the hope and dreams of the other for which we strive. Love wins. My way does not. We have learned there is joy in less not more. Love wins. Stuff does not.

All along the way love wins. And in that “perfect tense sense,” we look at each other and say, “love won, love wins, and love will win.”
