I read the comments on Wade’s recent post and then went over and read the comments here. Sad. An open note to Streak.

Dear Streak,
Thank you for your illustration of cordiality in the face of the default dismissiveness of many Southern Baptists.
Blessings.
Todd

I have found many strong conservatives to be cordial, and many liberals to be less so, as well as vice versa. Each of us has to discipline our own mouth and not castigate an entire movement. It is very encouraging to see someone modeling Christ for us.

For the last 30 minutes, I’ve been following your links to the various blogs and reading the posts. I sit here stunned and cannot believe the venom that I have read.

As you know, I have been gone from the SBC for a long time now both from the SBC church and SWBTS. And yet, I remember being at SWBTS just after Dilday was fired and Hemphill started. At that time, I could not escape hearing the same venom between conservatives and liberals. I was shocked then- and find myself aghast all over again at how folks communicate their kingdom views, exclusionary theologies, and self-righteous indignation.

But you aren’t like that- and neither is your brother Paul. While we may disagree on certain issues, there is always an understanding of mutual cordial hospitality- a characteristic, I believe, of a changed heart by Jesus. And I thank you both for such kindness directed my way.

But then, Jesus changes many hearts in different ways- and those who are so self-righteous may also have experienced God too, but it sure is difficult to see when venom is injected into various blog posts.

    Monk-in-Training,
    Thanks for your charitable comment.

    Bo,
I, with you, am praying for more changed hearts reflective of the love of Jesus – even in disagreement.

    Tim,
I will look forward to clearing the chairs and throwing down with you just as soon as I can find good reason. 🙂

Will look forward to the next time we fellowship.

I guess I’ll chime in here. Meeting you, Todd, has completely crushed the good time I was having writing off anyone willingly associated with the SBC. And from what I hear around town, your brother not a bad guy either.

In our conversations, we never seem to feel the need to clarify what might be real differences in theology or piety. But you listen and respond and I think i do as well.

Maybe if the assumption upfront in relationships was that there was never going to be any flame-throwing, parties on all sides would become better listeners.

I dunno, I think maybe next time we get together we need to pick a fight with each other just for grins. You no-good conservative so and so!
