The Tree Won

Yesterday after work I came home thinking I may be a lumberjack. You see we have a well established tree just to the east of our home. It provides much shade. Over the years this particular variety of tree succumbs to disease and many of the lower branches die. I thought I would clean them up. Chainsaw in hand I ascended the tree via ladder. Several branches provided little resistance. Yes, I was thinking of the lumberjack competitions seen on ESPN from time to time. I sized up the next branch to be reduced to fire wood or destined for decay. My plan was to cut it so it would fall just right. Standing in the trunk of the tree, yes a photo would be good but I could not use the chainsaw with one. Just as the chain cut through the last bit of branch I watched as the large branch did just as I had planned. Then. Not sizing the length of the branch left me to realize a bit too late, said branch would hit the ground and then fall toward me. I could not jump. There was no other footing to which I could flee. Sadly the branch came to rest against my left shin. Did I mention I was in shorts? While it is “merely a flesh wound,” I bear the marks of a lack of skill and precision. Me thinks I will hire the rest of it done.
