One of these days someone will need kitchen utensils. We would not normally think about those items when the entire house is gone. But, Lisa Holzerland remembers when she lost her house to a tornado nearly ten years ago in Nebraska.

Lisa thought about how she might help those affected by the May 20 tornado here in Oklahoma. She remembered her kitchen. Now a Pampered Chef Advance Director, Lisa created a campaign to both raise money and provide those basic kitchen needs. Here is how she describes it,

Hi everyone. I have a request that is close to my heart. Some of you may know that our family had a tornado hit our home when we lived in Hallam, Ne in May of 2004. Our town was demolished and our home was a total loss. Many, many people came to help and donated their time, money, and also items which helped us get back things we had lost. We felt so loved by those people who didn’t even know us and I want to return the favor.

. . .

I am holding a Pampered Chef fundraiser online where you can purchase items for these people so they can get back on their feet. I am also donating 100% of my commission from this to the American Red Cross because they were there for us right away and I believe in that organization. If you would please consider purchasing some basic items, I have a contact in Oklahoma where all the items will be shipped. It is the Pastor at Snow Hill Baptist Church in Tuttle, Oklahoma. All items will be shipped there and distributed to the families.

The Ethics of Eyewear: Glasses Are Expensive or, Why BonLook

Those are not your parents’ Ray Ban’s. Why they are not even your Oakley’s. Sunday evening we watched 60 Minutes. Generally I am leading an Adult Bible Study. But Sunday I was still determining just what was going on within my body that was making me feel much less than human. One of the segmentsContinue Reading

OU Football: Challenge Accepted

College football needs a little anarchy, a little chaos. The SEC will bludgeon itself to death as upstarts challenge the baseball scoring efficiency of LSU and the early season “Who have we played?,” Crimson Tide. Sooner rather than later the Big 12 will emerge with at least one if not three candidates for the NationalContinue Reading

Weekly Wrap – Maybe You Missed These Posts

Each of the last two weeks I faced a medical procedure to thwart the pain and effects of kidney stones. Two down, maybe one to go. We will see. Consequently I have had a bit more writing time than normal. In the event your week was unencumbered from physical distractions and you missed these posts.Continue Reading

Statistics and Stories in the Tuttle Times

My recent article in the Tuttle Times includes this line, “We tend to believe the stories statistics tell us.” (p.7) The various polls related to Election 2012 illustrate. In fact, some of us believe certain polls are used to tell the story the network chooses. You could argue this is a story in search of support.Continue Reading

Propaganda, “Rap On” or, Value Other Voices

My ears are old. I confess that when it comes to music I am often stuck in a time warp. My time spent listening to music in those adolescent and teenage years seem decades ago. Indeed they are. But, I still like music from the late 60’s and 70’s. I paid some attention in theContinue Reading
