There are any number of people for whom I am thankful today. It is hard to narrow it down. But I am sure you will understand why I have chosen as I have.
You will have to turn your laptop or tablet 90 degrees for this one.
Shane Claiborne offers a reminder of this video shot in 2008 for Buy Nothing Day. You won’t find me shopping on Black Friday. At the end of the video there are some options for doing something different, even more constructive for Jesus-y people.
“God creates a space for himself, and then fills it.” I often reflect on a sermon by Joseph Garlington at the National Pastor's Convention sponsored by Zondervan and YS in about 2000. Pastor Garlington took a look at the hymn, Breathe On Me, and asked if we ever paid attention to what we sing. Mold me. Melt me. Break me.
The implied, rhetorical, response is that we often sing mindlessly. I listened to a recent episode of Busted Stuff with Trip Hudgins. He wonders if our penchant to say, “I'm not . . .,” doesn't disclose more about us than we think. Put another way, we tend to create an empty space by pronouncing what we are not only to find in that created space what we are. And, maybe we learn what that is as we realize God is filling that very space.
What are your thoughts on this Monday? The day many pastors and ministers keep as empty after giving what they/we do on Sundays.
