Honoring …

A few years ago I heard sermon/talk by Walter Wangerin. He gave a powerful illustratoin of what it means to honor. The bible commands to “Honor your father and mother …” Seems a friend was honoring his mother by forgoeing a particular career track to return home and care for the farm and his mother. His mother had Alzheimer’s. Walter witnessed this care and suggested it a beautiful picture of “honoring.” You and I needn’t wait until our parents “need” us in this way to practice honoring. I was glad to honor my wife and help my girls honor their mother while she was sick. We do not do this because we feel sorry or even empathetic. Patty cares for us, nurtures the girls and works besides. Our best way to show we honor her for her labors comes when we care for her out of our love for her and desire to honor her. Thanks girls for honoring your mother yesterday. Good practice for the future!
