Kildeer use a method of distraction to keep predators from harming their young. We often have Kildeer nesting at various places on the property at Snow Hill.
Maybe twenty feet off of our parking lot a nest was discovered. Four eggs have now hatched and these little ones are being led around by the unique call of the parents.
I went to get a photo for our children’s bible study classes and was greeted by the defense Kildeer employ to stave off predators. As I moved closer to the nest the Kildeer came within just a couple of feet. Here, I assume, is the “mother” who squawks as if to say, “Not my young!”
Maybe some of the recent instances of neglect should require us to learn something from these animals when it comes to our young.
